Salt marshes are home to a vast ecosystem of life, plants and animals, for example, where the marsh grasses meet the mud flats is home to the muscles and the mud flats are where fiddler crabs make their homes. With out the marsh grasses keeping the peat and mud in place the marshes would disappear leaving the animals with no home as well as increasing flooding to the inland areas. With sea level rise and invasive grass species on the rise the salt marshes are in danger. There are many salt marsh restoration projects in Rhode Island, my children and I have participated in two. This art quilt shows Nag Marsh on Prudence Island which is located in the middle of Narraganset Bay. The Narraganset Bay Estuarine Research Reserve located on Prudence Island has many current marsh research projects as well as educational programs. I hope by connecting people of all ages to the beauty of marshes they will be more willing to make changes in their lives to support salt marsh preservation and restoration.
